How to log break intervals

A workday can stay in a single time entry. Start time and End time remain, for example 09:00 and 18:00. Lunch and other breaks are logged inside that span and deducted from the net hour total.

The option is off by default and only an administrator can turn it on. After it is turned on and time tracking is saved, the time entry form shows breaks.

Where to turn it on

Open Settings > General settings and find the Time tracking block.

Check Allow break intervals on time entries and click Save time tracking.

The option lets people log break intervals, such as lunch, inside a single time entry. The start and end of the day stay the same, and the breaks are deducted from the total.

Breaks on the same entry

On the time entry form, fill in Start time and End time. Both fields need a value before a break can be added.

  1. Click Add breaks.
  2. In New break, enter Stop and Return.
  3. Click Add break.
  4. To add another break on the same entry, click Add another break.

Each break appears on the list with the break tag. Click the row to open Edit break. Use Delete break to remove that break.

Example: start at 09:00, end at 18:00, lunch from 12:00 to 13:00 and another break from 15:30 to 15:45. The entry stays 09:00–18:00, and the net total is the period minus the two breaks: 7:45.

Break rules

  • Return must be after Stop.
  • The break must fall inside the entry period.
  • One break cannot overlap another.
  • The sum of the breaks must fit inside the entry period.

Total and report

The saved total is the span from start to end, minus the breaks. The entry start and end stay unchanged.

With the option on, the detailed report includes the Total breaks column.

Breaks are deducted from the hours on that project time entry. This does not replace the time clock, which still records the workday and payroll.
